Opera 3 was the second full release of the Opera web browser. At this point, users had to pay a fee to obtain an Opera liscence after the trial period had expired. Opera 3 included such features as JavaScript, pop-up blocking, Elektra rendering engine, and faster JPEG and GIF rendering, among others.

Opera 3.00b was released on September 15, 1997. It was a beta release.
Opera 3.0 was released on December 1, 1997. It added:

- SSL
- Nicknames (aliases for search pages/bookmarks)

Opera 3.10 was released on February 1, 1998. It was a security update.
Opera 3.21 was released on April 1, 1998. It was a security update.
Opera 3.5[]
Opera 3.5 was released on November 18, 1998. It added:
- Elektra rendering engine
- Integrated download/transfer manager
- TLS 1.0 support
- Java functionality through plug-ins
- File Upload
- CSS 1 support
- UserCSS
- Offline mode
Opera 3.51 was released on December 22, 1998. It was a security update.
Opera 3.6[]
Opera 3.6 was released on May 6, 1999. It added:
- New optional user interface button sets (2)
- Improved CSS, HTML, JavaScript, and faster JPEG and GIF image rendering
Opera 3.61 was released on December 21, 1999. It was a security update.
Opera 3.62b was released on January 25, 2000. It was a beta release.
Opera 3.62 was released on March 10, 2000. It was a security update.
Opera 3.65 BeOS beta was released on July 29, 1999. It was a beta release, and was only for the BeOS operating system.
